The Dominica Amateur Athletics Association in collaboration with the Dominica Olympic Committee was able to send seven athletes to the 21st Central American and Caribbean athletics championship held in Santiago de Cali, Columbia (4th - 6th July, 2008).
From first reports, it seems that the Championship was badly organized and the conditions for the athletes during the first 2 days in Colombia were not at all favorable for a serious preparation. Team Senior Chris Lloyd has sent us a short report which documents a few first hand details (please see below). Despite all the problems sorrounding the competition, Coach Jerome Romain did his best to prepare the athletes mentally for their events.
Short summary:
After winning his preliminary and Semi-final heats of the 200 meters Chris Lloyd posted the fastest qualifying time of 20.53 seconds going into the finals the next day. We were hoping that based on his consistency through the 2 rounds that he was able to finish on the medal table. Unfortunately the unfavorable weather conditions going into the finals hinder Chris from bringing out his best as he settled good 5th place clocking a time of 20.85 seconds.
Erison Hurtault our newest addition to the team won his 200 meters prelim heat in a personal best time of 21.04 seconds. However he was knocked out in the semi finals after clocking a time of 21.22 seconds.
Tyron Benjamin finished 7th in the discus, throwing a distance of 49.51 meters, which represents his season best. He then went on to finish 4th in the shot put with 16.85 meters.
Brendan Williams cleared a height of 2.05 meters in the high jump and unfortunately on his 2.10 attempt he slid away and injured his ankle.
Andy Baron, who sustained a hamstring injury still managed to throw the javelin a distance of 55.34 meter.
The highlight of the team's performance came from our two Olympians Chris Lloyd and Erison Hurtault, along with our two local athletes Joseph Bazil and Smith Telemaque who broke the National 4 x 400 meter relay record established in 1989. This 19 year old record stood at 3:16.3 seconds but is now replaced by the record breaking performance time of 3:11.06 seconds.
(Note: There is a mistake in the official results listing Tyron as 3rd leg runner instead of Smith)
We extend congratulations to the coach and team who represented Dominica at this year's Central American and Caribbean Athletics Championship.
